The Art Academy
de los Niños opened in September of 1990 when the founder, Sandi Wright
moved her studio from Los Alamos to Santa Fe, New Mexico. While in Los Alamos, she
founded and directed the Overlook Art School, located at the scenic
White Rock overlook. Hundreds of
students, young and old have taken her classes in drawing, painting,
pottery, and mixed media with many today making a living with their art.
She taught fine arts in the public schools
in California and New Mexico for 30 years.
She also taught painting at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Ca., pottery at Santa Fe Community College, as well as seminars at San Juan
College, Farmington, NM and St. John’s College, Santa Fe.
While it is beneficial to start children at an early
age drawing and learning to "see" as an artist, it is not essential. Ms.
Wright believes that everyone can learn to draw well. Sandi uses Betty
Edwards method of "Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain" to help
achieve this. Classes are limited in size with individual instruction
and encouragement to advance the student rapidly to success. Most of her
young students continue into their teens. There are after-school art
classes for pre-teens, children and teens, as well as evening classes
for adults. Classes consist of drawing, painting, pottery, sculpture and
printmaking.
Sandi’s paintings have shown in and been represented
by galleries in Denver, New Orleans, Cleveland, Santa Fe, Taos,
Albuquerque and Los Alamos. She is currently showing in her home gallery
by appointment only.
Ms. Wright is the author of a beautifully illustrated children’s
book, "The Adventures of Santa Fe Sam", nominated for a
New Mexico book award in six categories. She
won the Southern New Mexico State best-of-show award with her watercolor
painting "Sudden Storm". Her work been accepted into numerous juried
shows. She received a grant as archeological (field) artist to draw
artifacts in the Middle East (Jordan) and in 2004 received a fellowship
to teach southwest history and art in China. |
